Trichotillomania 

 is a disorder characterised by an irresistible urge to remove or pull one's own hair, which results in alopecia ( hair loss ). Trichotillomania is also called trichotillosis or hair-pulling disorder. 

Trichotillomania is a disorder that affects 1-2% of the population, a majority of them female. The main feature is the recurrent compulsion to pull out one’s hair. 
 

Causes 

The causes of trichotillomania are unknown. The causes may include: 

Genetic and environmental factors 

Abnormalities in brain pathways that regulate the emotions, habits and impulse control 

Depression and anxiety may also be a predisposing factor.
 

Complications 

If untreated, it may lead to complications such as 

Emotional distress which could lead to low self-esteem, depression or drug abuse.

Problems with social and work functioning.

Skin and hair damage- hair pulling could lead to scarring or infections which can permanently affect hair growth.

Hair balls- due to eating hair, it can lead to weight loss, vomiting, intestinal obstruction or death. 

 

Alopecia 

Alopecia areata, also known as spot baldness, is a condition in which hair is lost from some or all areas of the body. Often, it results in a few bald spots on the scalp, each about the size of a coin… 

Some people experience hair loss on their crown or the back of their head, while others notice patches of missing hair around the temples or hairline. 

 

Symptoms 

The main sign is a loss of hair. It may manifest as: 

Gradual thinning of hair on the head 

Circular/patchy hairless regions 

Sudden loss of hair 

Loosening of hair 

Full body hair loss 

Patches of scaling that spread over the scalp 
 

Complications 

Patients with alopecia areata are at increased risk of developing other autoimmune diseases such as thyroid disease, vitiligo 

Emotional issues such as depression
